Friday Web Roundup: Laughter makes You Healthy, Irrational People Get Violent, Rich Kids Have Too Much Time and Too Little Sense, Stupid Infomercials, and Super Mario Gets a Portal Gun

It’s Friday and, knock on wood, the east coast has not been hit with an earthquake, hurricane, tornado, locust plague, or an invasion of seemingly benevolent but in fact incredibly hostile aliens (though there are still two days left in the week…).

To celebrate our first “natural disaster free” week in almost two weeks, here are some links you can enjoy wasting time with!

Laughter Has a Positive Impact on Vascular Function

You’ve probably heard that laughing is good for your health. Well, here’s another study that confirms it. So get out there and start laughing – watch a funny movie, listen a funny radio show, read a funny blog or hire a funny speaker for your next event (whoops! How did that shameless plug slip in there?)

When Irrational People Attack

I like to post a lot about stupid people making stupid decisions, especially in the moment out of strong emotion (like here, here, and here). This link is to a collection of examples of people getting violent in irrational ways that makes even me, who tries to find these types of stories regularly, kind of shocked. It’s all so very sad and stupid…

A Tribute to Doing it Wrong

You know what’s ridiculous? The way infomercials and other “As soon on TV!” type ads display people who “need” their product. From being unable to pour soda, to being vexed by plastic wrap, to being unable to crack an egg, they make the average person look like a grade-A moron. I don’t want to live in the world where the average human can’t get their own shoes on and off, but I sure like to watch a video of all of those demonstrations strung together to Beatles music:

If you’re familiar with Super Mario Brothers and the first person puzzler Portal, then you’ll love this video of how Super Mario Brothers would play if Mario had a portal gun:

Blog Posts of Awesomeness Past

You ever one of those days when you just feel blocked, where the words won’t flow? I do. Right now. At this moment, I have nothing awesome to say…

Since I recently posted a lesson I learned about being awesome, and how you shouldn’t post something unless it’s awesome, I have decided not to force some average words onto the blog just to get something done.

Instead, I will share with you some past posts from this blog. Though some of these were written a while ago, they are all timely right now…

If you are a new reader (welcome!) then you may not have seen these. If you’ve been around for a while (thank you!) you may enjoy these “oldie-but-goodies!”

Blog Posts of Awesomeness Past:

Lessons from the Dresden Files

The latest book in Jim Butcher’s awesome “Dresden Files” series, Ghost Story came out recently. I finished reading it and as usual, it was great. Not the best in the series, but still a great read. Here’s a post I wrote about how you can use the same principles Jim Butcher uses to write his novels to help you market you business and stand out in a crowd:

5 Ways to Make Your Product or Service Stand Out More than a Human Wizard at a Vampire Ball

Back to School

For many, this coming Tuesday represents “back to school time.” Boo! Some students and teachers are already back at school. Double boo! This is a post about the last day of school how you can build certain principles into your own life to create the same sense of excitement kids and teachers feel at the end of the school year, even if you don’t get a summer vacation:

Three Lessons From the Last Day of School

The Reboot of DC Comics

DC comics, publisher of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and many, many others, is “re-booting” their entire universe. Basically, they are starting all their books over from scratch so even if you have never read a DC Comic before, you can start reading and get all the stories from the start. I don’t know how it’s going to go (I haven’t read DC Comics  – or any others, really – in quite a while). However, this did seem like an appropriate time to link to a post on success lesson you can learn from the Superfriends:

Motivational Humor: Success Lessons from Each of the Superfriends

New Speaking Page

Ok, I’ll admit it. One of the reasons the awesome hasn’t been flowing super well is that I have been using a lot of my creative energy to re-do the speaking information on this web site. If you plan events for your company or association, know someone who plans events for a company or association, or are just curious to see the new speaking info, you can see it here:

Reminder: Paid Public Speaker Registration Closing This Week!

This is a reminder about the new Paid Public Speaker Coaching Program.

This new program, which coaches people to become successful paid speakers, is starting soon. There are enough approved applicants to fill the small number of spaces, but a few approved of them decided at the last minute that the timing isn’t right or the program is too pricey for them.

Included in the program will be coaching and instruction regarding:

  • How to give compelling and engaging presentations and talks that will get you invited back again and again
  • How to get hired to speak
  • How to set your fees
  • How to create a solid speaking contract
  • How to work up to getting paid thousands of dollars per speech or workshop
  • How to locate sponsors or people to hire you
  • How to focus your topic
  • The formula for successful titles and subtitles for talks and workshops
  • How to overcome any fears about speaking
  • How to demystify and use speaking technology (slides, microphones, sound out of computers, and so on)
  • How to create great handouts and slides
  • How to avoid the three biggest mistakes new speakers make

You could earn back your program tuition with your first few paid speaking engagements. If you think this is for you, please visit:

Monday Motivation: Have a “Case of the Mondays”? Then Read This!

I woke up this morning and, in one of my many successful efforts to procrastinate, I checked my Facebook account. In my News Feed, practically back-to-back, were the following two status updates:

  • Now we face the worst of the inescapable disasters, MONDAY
  • Mondays are magical!!!! Make sure you approach your day with the right attitude! How you start you day makes all the difference in the world 🙂

Two people experiencing the same day in two very different ways.

Which are you?

I try to be in the second group as much as I can, but I’ll admit it, I sometimes find myself in group one (and frankly, as motivational and positive as I try to be, I don’t think I’ve ever described anything other than David Copperfield as “magical.” Not my style. But hey, to each their own!)

It’s a shame that so many people face Mondays with disdain. Think about it: a full 1/7th of all you days – 14.28% of you entire life – will be spent on Mondays. Don’t you owe it to yourself to learn how to face them with excitement and energy?

Here are three few tips you can use to start liking Mondays (and even thinking of them as “magical”):

1) Have Something to Look Forward To

What does a typical Monday look like to you? Do you get out of a bed a few minutes late, run around getting ready, and then trudge off to a less than satisfying job? If so, then it’s no wonder that you don’t like Mondays!

Try to set up something for yourself that’s enjoyable first thing Monday morning. This could be a huge change (getting a new job that you enjoy) or a small one (plan to spend a little time Monday morning before work exercising, reading a good book, or enjoying a hobby).

2) Physically Prepare on Sunday

Today is Monday, and I’m feeling a tad under-motivated, mostly because of how I spent Sunday evening. After being cooped up inside all weekend due to Hurricane Irene, I went out with some friends for dinner. Nothing crazy, but I stayed up a little late, ate a greasy burger and fries, and enjoyed a couple beers. Delicious and fun, but not a routine that sets you up for pep and vigor the next day.

I was not surprised to wake up feeling a little “blah” today. If you’re consistently waking up Monday mornings feeling “blah,” take a look at what you’re doing on Sunday night.

I am by no means saying you shouldn’t make the most of your weekend, but consider taking it a little easier on Sunday night and see if that changes how you feel about Monday morning.

3) Hold off Doing Exciting Stuff on the Weekend

Now, now, before you get mad at me, let me explain. I am not suggesting that you don’t have fun over the weekend. However, by strategically waiting to do certain things, you may be able to increase your Monday motivation…

Have you ever been sitting there on the weekend when an exciting idea for work comes to you so you sneak off for an hour or two to work on it? If so, I suggest that you force yourself to hold off working on it and make a note to work on it first thing Monday.

You’ll basically be playing “hard to get” with yourself. By not allowing yourself to work on it, you’ll build anticipation. The idea will keep popping up into your head, and you’ll keep saying, “Not yet, wait ‘til Monday.” By the time Monday morning comes around, you’ll be bursting at the seams, pumped up to get your stay started and work on the idea.

Admittedly, this strategy may work better if you work for yourself or have a side business. However, you can still make this work for yourself by strategically waiting on anything you find exciting and promising yourself you’ll work on it first thing Monday morning.

Measure Your Life By Your Mondays…

If you work a Monday to Friday work week, then how you feel Monday morning is a good barometer of how your life is going. It’s certainly a great measure of how you feel about your professional life.
If you’re consistently de-energizes, unhappy, and unmotivated, then you need to take some action!
Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go do whatever I can to make this a “magical” Monday…

Friday Web Roundup: Preparing For Success, Digital Sharecropping, Being Mark Zuckerberg, and the Best Customer Service Ever!

It’s Friday, and here in the Northeast we are preparing for what may be our worst storm ever – and this is only a couple of days after we had an earthquake!

Times are stressful, so why not kick back, relax, and enjoy a little good old fashioned web surfing?

Here are a few links you might enjoy – I know I did!

What If You Succeed?

Something of a cautionary tale from Ittybiz.com. Many of us want success and we want to achieve something. However, it’s all too common to not actually be ready to succeed…

This post is a fun story with a good point: Be sure you are ready to get what you wish for!

Mark Zuckerberg isn’t Mark Zuckerberg

From Seth Godin’s blog, this is a short post about how people believe that some people succeed just because they are gifted exceptions. A great read for anyone making excuses for why they are not succeeding.

Morton’s Has the Best Customer Service Ever!

My buddy Matt sent me this story about how Peter Shankman, creator of “Help a Reporter Out” jokingly tweeted that he wanted Morton’s to meet him at the airport with a steak – and they did it!

I don’t actually believe Morton’s would do this for any and every customer that tweeted that they wanted a steak, but it’s a cool story that shows three things:

  1. Twitter can work
  2. Cool customer service stories spread
  3. It never hurts to ask

Something Funny, Something Nerdy

Hmm, normally on these roundups I like to post a link to something funny, or something nerdy, or ideally both. This week, I got nothing. Don’t know if that’s because I didn’t come across anything good, or if I just forgot to make a note of it. Oh well.

To help me out in future weeks, if you come across truly funny or good and nerdy, send it over!

For now, I leave you with a relatively old “movie trailer mashup” that still makes me laugh:

3 Ways to Stop “Getting Ready to Get Ready!”

“On your mark, get ready, get ready, get ready, keep getting ready, get ready some more…”

Wait, that doesn’t sound right, does it?

No, it doesn’t. But that’s how many people approach their lives. They live in a perpetual state of “getting ready to get ready.” They never quite seem to get to a point of saying, “Go!”

This week, I, along with two partners, launched the second round of our Paid Public Speaker Group Coaching Program. If you have any interest in starting or growing a speaking business, you should definitely check it out!

As we prepared for round two, I reflected back on the first group. A lot of people made some great progress with their speaking businesses. However, some made more progress than others.

You know who made the most progress? The people who took action. They picked a market, topic, and title, found groups in that market that might be interested in those topics, and started contacting them. Those people started booking gigs and making money sooner than the rest.

Others spent a lot of time, “getting ready to get ready.” That is, they spent a long time picking the perfect market, topic, and title. They wanted to get their speech outline just right. They wanted to have a great website up before they started. They made much less progress over the course of the program.

I am not trying to be mean to those people; they still made a lot of progress. And all of those elements (a great speech, an awesome website, the right market and topic, etc) are important. However, it can be very easy to keep waiting until all the elements are in place before taking action.

This is a natural reaction, but a very detrimental one. The people who made the most progress didn’t get hung up on getting ready. They did some basic preparation and then took action.

This lesson holds true in any business. The people who take action do better, get farther, and make more progress than the ones who spend a lot of time “preparing.”

Here are three ways you can stop “getting ready to get ready” and just GO!

1) Make Decisions

In my experience, the greatest procrastination happens not when we have a huge task to do, but rather when we have a (seemingly) huge decision to make. Weeks go by and projects come to a stand-still while you try to decide which market, what slogan, which direction, etc.

This problem occurs only when you’re in charge. If you’re working for someone else, they tend to give you deadlines that force you to decide. Or they decide for you.

If it’s your own business, or a decision you need to make in your personal life, it’s a lot easier to put it off. Don’t.

You have enough info. Be your own boss, give yourself a hard deadline, and make that decision you have been avoiding making. It’s the only way to make any progress.

2) Start Imperfect

“Getting ready to get ready” often occurs when you are trying to get all your ducks perfectly lined up before you start. Here’s a secret: perfection never happens. You can’t plan for every contingency, and there will also be one little duck that refuses to line up properly. Let it go…

Chances are, once you begin implementing your plan, things are going to go off course anyway. You will learn more by taking some imperfect action, analyzing the results, and making adjustments than you ever would by trying to get it perfectly right before you start.

Start small, take action, and make adjustments. Scary? Could be. Effective? Absolutely.

3) Smack Yourself in the Head

Ok, you don’t have to smack yourself in the head literally. Though you could if you’d like. And maybe you need to…

One of the hardest aspects of “getting ready to get ready” is that you may not even realize you are doing it!

The excuses seem so valid. There really does seem to be so much prep work. The timing never seems right.

I get it, life sucks. Oh well, move on.

I have met a lot of people who are preparing to do something (start a business, go back to school, etc) and when I ask them about it, they say, “I’m getting my stuff together and will start soon.” Then see them, years later and when I ask how things are going, they say, “I think I am just about ready now. I’m going to do it.”

You read that right. Years – literally, years! – have gone by, and they are still preparing.

This is where you need to smack yourself in the head. “Preparing” becomes so second nature that you don’t even realize what is going on.

The first step is admitting you have a problem. Take a long hard look at yourself and your goals and ask yourself, “am I just wasting a lot of time, getting ready to get ready?”

If so, give yourself a nice smack in the head and get started.

How about you? Is there some area in your life where you are “getting ready to get ready?” If so, smack yourself in the head, make a decision, and be willing to start with imperfect. In the long run, you’ll be happy you did…

Do You Want to Be a Paid Public Speaker?

I am happy to announce that we (myself along with my partners Fred and Bill) are opening up a second round of the Paid Public Speaker Group Coaching Program, and registration is now open!

This is an awesome program where we take a small number of people and help them pick a niche, craft a topic, put together a presentation, create products, and, most importantly, build their speaking business!

Read more about it (and fill out your application!) here Paid Public Speaker Group Coaching Program

The participants in the first group have made some great progress. For example:

  • All participants selected a niche they could dominate and become the expert in
  • Several created products and were able to make money – even at a free speaking gig!
  • At least one raised his fees and got paid for an hour what he use to earn speaking for a full day!
  • Just about everyone now has websites, speech titles, outlines, and a clear direction for organizations to reach out to for speaking engagements
  • Half of the group has already spoken or lined up specific dates in the future for speaking gigs
  • And more!

It’s been pretty cool. Actually, it’s been very, very cool. This program is perfect for:

  • People just starting out in the speaking business
  • Anyone who wants to start in the speaking business but is unsure of how to proceed
  • Someone who has been in the speaking business for a while but has been floundering and needs a new start

5 Blunders that Can Derail a Career or Business

I have a guest post up on Jeetesh Kathawaroo’s blog!

Jeetesh is a fellow speaker, management consultant, and comedian, and, similar to what I do here, he likes to use humor to get his point across. The tagline for his blog is, “There’s no ‘I’ in team…there’s also no ‘F’ or ‘U’” Awesome!

Check out my post on his site:

5 Blunders that Can Derail a Career or Business

As you might guess, the article is about five dumb mistakes that will hold you back, whether you are in business for yourself or working for a company. They may seem obvious, but I have seen all of them done by (seemingly) intelligent people.

Enjoy the post, check out the rest of Jeetesh’s stuff, and leave a comment on my post on his blog too!

The Value of Being Awesome, Understanding Your Genius, and Having Rabid Enemies

Have you ever been to “Summer Camp for Adults”?

Ok, that’s not a real thing, but every year, the National Speakers Association’s annual convention feels exactly like that.

I go away for a few days, see old friends, make new ones, fill my days with activities, and stay up late into the night…um…socializing…

However, amongst all that madcap fun, there is serious learning going on. Whether it’s during a general session with 1300 attendees, a breakout room with 300, or just having a one on one conversation with a colleague, I always walk away with some new ideas.

Here are three simple but very powerful ideas I took away this year that can help you too, even if you are not a professional speaker:

1) Awesome Spreads

This may be my favorite quote from the entire four day event. It came from Scott Stratten of Unmarketing in his session about creating viral videos and online content.

He had a lot of good ideas and techniques, and one of his main premises was that “awesome spreads.” Simply put, if you create awesome content, it will spread. Non-awesome content doesn’t.

(I wrote a post on a similar idea: Steve Martin’s Simple Plan for Massive Success!)

If you want your business to grow, if you want your content to spread, if you want to get ahead in your career, then be awesome. Awesome spreads. Awesome works. Awesome succeeds.

The follow up advice to this was, “Don’t do anything unless it’s awesome.”

What are you doing, right now, today or this week, that’s awesome?

2) Understand Your Genius

The hardest thing about being brilliant is realizing that you actually are.

I don’t say this to sound arrogant. All people are brilliant in their own way, including you. However, because that brilliance comes so naturally, it’s easy to take it for granted.

The first step in living up to your full potential is to appreciate and value what you are brilliant at. As one friend at the convention put it, “you need to realize what your gift is.”

It can be hard to figure out what that is.

What’s your gift? What are you brilliant at? What do you do incredibly well that you take for granted?

Until you figure those things out, you’ll never be able to realize your full potential.

3) You Can’t Have Rabid Fans If You’re Not Willing to Have Rabid Enemies

This one is from Larry Winget in his presentation about branding.

His advice: “Take a Stand.”

Do so even if it means alienating and angering people who disagree with you.

This doesn’t mean that you go out and intentionally piss people off. However, it does mean that you don’t try to please everyone. You accept the fact that your opinions and approach may not be for everyone, and that some people may criticize you or even hate you for it.

That can be disheartening and make you want to change your approach. Remember though, that having a few people dislike what you do is usually a good thing! If no one hates what you do, you’re probably playing it too safe.

If you keep to the middle of the road then sure, no one will really hate you. But at the same time, no one will really flock to you either. The more you pick a lane and take a stand, the more people you will find (and who will find you) who love what you do. The side effect of that is that you will also find more people who hate it. Oh well, it comes with the territory.

Don’t make it your goal to be contrarian just to get a reaction. However, when you are out there doing what you do and you find yourself pulling back because you are afraid of saying something that might garner some disapproval, then remember, you can’t have rabid fans if you don’t have rabid enemies!

Are you taking a stand or are you pulling back out of fear of angering people? Are you willing to have rabid enemies in order to get rabid fans?

Looking back over these three points, I see that they all tie together quite nicely:

  1. Discover what your genius is
  2. Make it as awesome as you possibly can
  3. Go and spread that awesome genius even if (or especially if) it makes some people hate you

Now that is a recipe for success in any business…

Monday Motivation – Who Haven’t You Talked to in Far Too Long?

 “Summer’s going fast
Nights growing colder
Children growing up
Old friends growing older
Experience slips away.”

– “Time Stand Still,” Rush

I spent a few days in southern California recently, and I was shocked and amazed by how many old friends I have in that area. Not that I was shocked and amazed that I had friends mind you (I am a heck of a guy…), I just shocked out how many of them live in theLos Angelesarea.

My five travel days were packed, and I still didn’t see everyone I wanted to.

The people I met ran the full gamut:

  • Family friends I have known my whole life (literally)
  • High school friends
  • College friends
  • Speaker buddies

The sad thing is that I had not seen most of these people in at least a year (most were 2+ years) or even talked to them on the phone in a very long time. When we got together though, it didn’t matter. We were able to slip right back into great conversations and good times (“great conversations” for me usually entail talking about stupid, random things and laughing our asses off doing it)

As I left each friend, I half-jokingly said the same thing I say every time I leave a friend I haven’t seen in a while, “This time let’s not let so much time pass between visits!”

Ha! That’s like at the end of date when the other person says, “I had a real swell time. I’ll call you sometime…”

Phooey! It’s not going to happen!

Few would argue that your relationships are the most precious assets you have and that time is your most precious resource.

So the simple question for you is:

How much of your most precious resource are you spending on your most precious asset?

If you are like most, your answer is, “not nearly enough.”

It’s not because you don’t care, or you don’t value the friendship/relationship. It’s just that life (Ding!Link) happens, and it’s easy to put off that call or email for a day. Then a day becomes a week. Which becomes a month. Which becomes a year.

Sadly, I can guarantee that letting that time pass will be one of the things you regret most when you look back on your life.

Fortunately, you can prevent that from happening!

Take time right now to send an email to an old friend you haven’t spoken to in a long time. Just to check in and catch up.

Then take a little more time and schedule a phone call either with that person or another friend. And make sure you don’t miss that phone call!

That’s it. Two small little steps to get the ball rolling. Slowly build the habit of staying in touch with the people who are important to you.

Believe me, you’ll be happy you did. If not now, then in future. I promise.

P.S. Yes, the opening lyrics are from a Rush song. It’s awesome, and it even has guest vocals from Aimee “Voices Carry” Mann. You can listen to the song and watch what is arguably the world’s worst music video here.
