Monday Motivation: The 2011 “Do Something Great in November” Challenge!

Are you ready to finish this year by achieving something absolutely positively freakin’ AMAZING??

If so (and if not, why the heck not??), then you are in the right place – because it’s time once again for the “Do Something Great in November” Challenge!

Last year, I ran the “Do Something Great in November” challenge. It was a simple challenge, and there was no cost to participate. Basically, I challenged my readers to set a big goal for themselves in November and throw their all into achieving it.

This was inspired by my participation in National Novel Writing Month, (NaNoWriMo) which is a contest where writers from all over the world try to write a novel (50,000 words) just in November.

Since I was taking part in that in November, I asked my readers to join in with their own goals. We had some cool participation:

  • Jack committed to going back to school to improve his IT skills
  • Chris wanted to improve his leadership abilities both for work and in his community
  • Several readers posted that they would finish their own non-fiction books they had been working on
  • One reader wanted to focus on spending more time with his/her kids and have more fun
  • And more!

At the end of the month, I know more than a few let me know that they nailed their goals that month (I reached my goal of 50,000 words for my novel). It was a fun, crazy way to spend the month, but it was incredibly rewarding. In fact, it was so rewarding that…

I’m Doing it Again – and I Want You to Join Me!

Yes, I am participating in NaNoWriMo again. But this November I’m going bigger, and I  have some new goals as well, all for November.

This November, I will:

  • Write a complete draft of a novel, which will most likely be around 100,000 words
  • Write 30,000 new words of non-fiction (for my blogs, as well as for guest articles and new books)
  • Finish the final draft of my upcoming “Say, ‘Yes And!’” book
  • Finish first drafts of two additional books that will be based on Smart Ass blog posts
  • Finish the outline for my upcoming “Ding Happens!” book
  • Run the Smart Ass Success Telelesminar Series every Tuesday of the month.
  • Take Wednesday, November 23rd through Sunday, November 27th completely off for Thanksgiving – and just site back, smile, and relax!

Sound like a lot? I think so, but that’s the exciting part! I am definitely the type of person who loves to take on a big challenge for short period of time. It excites me, energizes me, and maximizes my motivation.

Sure, you could set a small goal for the month – and frankly, a small goal is better than no goal – but why not join in the frenzy and take on something BIG? Even if you don’t quite reach the goal, you will probably make a lot more progress than you would otherwise!

Question: What big goal would you set for yourself if you just allowed yourself to think really BIG?

What Major Goal Do You Want to Take On?

I’m not saying you have to write a novel or participate in NaNoWriMo – or write anything. But I invite you to come up with your own goal or activity and attack it with a vengeance for the month of November!

If writing a novel is not your thing, here are a few things you could do:

  • Take on a big fitness goal
  • Learn a foreign language
  • Start (or grow) a business
  • Pick up a new skill, like dancing or karate
  • Tackle a home improvement/maintenance/de-cluttering project

The specific goal you pick is up to you (tips on how to pick a “good” project are below).

The important thing is that you do something!

Question: What would you love to do that you have put off, neglected, or ignored for far too long?

Here’s the Deal

I am doing something great for myself in November, and I want you to do something great for yourself too! As such, I want to support you on your journey…

Here’s how I would like to help you:

  • I will be posting regular updates in this blog about my progress, challenges, and surprises. Hopefully that will encourage you and make you feel like you are not alone
  • I invite you to post your own progress, challenges, and surprises in the comment section of my updates. That way we can all help each other.
  • Accountability helps! By publishing this blog post, I am making myself accountable. You can do the same thing by posting your November goal in the comment section below. At the very least, I will hold you accountable by emailing you periodically and checking in.

There’s no cost or sign up. Just post in the comments below letting me and the world know what you will be doing. Then check back in (or better yet, subscribe by RSS or Email) and update us on your progress.

Question: Are you willing to step up, declare your November intention, and be accountable?

“Sounds Good Avish, But November Is Not A Good Month For Me…”

Bah! It’s never going to be a good month! There will always be too much going on, you will always have too much to do, and “three months from now” will always seem like the perfect time to start.

Consider this your motivational kick in the ass! At least if you do it now, you won’t be alone – you can follow along with my progress and share your own.

To be honest, November is not the best month for me either. I am very tempted to push it off (January is looking mighty good for this…). But NaNoWriMo is November, so that’s when I’m going to do it. Besides, there’s no time like the present!

As a self employed person, it would be easy for me to spend all of my time writing a novel and let my business slide for a month. That would be stupid. Colossally stupid. So, for the month of November, I plan on maintaining all of my regular “life obligations.” These include:

  • Regular posts to this blog
  • Working on and writing posts for another site I am doing with a partner
  • Developing and delivering speaking engagements I have in November
  • Completing a side freelance assignment I have taken on
  • Exercising regularly
  • Having a social life
  • Going away and seeing my family for Thanksgiving

Question: Is November really not a good month or are you just putting up one more in a long line of excuses that perpetually keep you from achieving what you truly want?

Tips On Picking the Right Project

There’s really no right or wrong here; whatever you truly want to do and are willing to commit to is fine.

If you are stuck, however, here are a few tips to help you pick a great project:

  • Make it big enough to stretch you – A big goal is not about the status quo. It’s also not about “slow and steady improvement (a perfectly valid approach, but not the point of this project). Pick something big enough that you know you’ll have to push yourself. You’ll know you’re on the right track if your goal mostly excites you but also scares you just a little bit.
  • But not so big you snap – Of course there are limits to stretching yourself. Don’t pick a goal that is so big that you’ll give up after three days. There is an art to picking the right size goal. Unfortunately, everyone is different so I can’t give you a hard and fast guideline. I will say this: if, when you think about the goal, you feel more fear than excitement, you’ve probably made it too big for yourself.
  • It should be motivating – Sounds obvious, right? The key is that you pick something that gets you going. What you want to do, not necessarily what you think you should do. For example, I could make the argument that I should be spending all that time on my business. However, what I really want to do, what really motivates me, is the thought of writing the novel. As long as I don’t let the business lapse (see above) I’m going with the motivating one.
  • What does your gut tell you? – When in doubt, pay attention to your gut. Chances are, when I asked you what you really wanted to do, an answer popped into your head. It’s probably an answer that’s been popping into your head for years and you have been ignoring it. Stop ignoring it! Spend just one month throwing yourself fully into that project and see what happens.

Question: What is the big goal your gut is telling you to pursue?

Why You Should Do This

If you’re wondering why you should bother doing this, here are a few reasons:

  • Achieving Your Goal – Clearly, the primary benefit of doing this is that you achieve (or make great progress towards a goal. That in and of itself should be more than enough. However, there are a few more benefits…
  • Building New Habits – There is some disagreement on how long it takes to form a habit, from the colloquially stated “21 days,” to the more scientifically researched 66 Days. By the second number, 30 days is not long enough to fully instill a new habit, but it is well on the way. And let’s face it, while achieving something great in a month will be awesome, wouldn’t it be more awesome to build a habit that allows you to continue progressing long after the month is over?
  • Developing New Awareness – One reason to take on a large goal that stretches you is to simply show yourself that you can. You can find the time, you can exert the discipline, you can achieve that which you were previously unable to achieve. One of the primary things that holds many people back is simply their own lack of belief in their own potential. By busting your ass and making major progress on a major goal, you can overcome that belief and build momentum to do more.
  • Just so you can say, “I did it!”On December 1st, you can either be more or less where you are right now, or you can look back over the previous month and say, “Damn! I did something great!” The choice is yours…

Question: If you don’t do this, what will you do to achieve your goals, build new habits, and break limiting beliefs?

The Next Step

November first is fast approaching. Here are a few things you can to get ready for the “Do Something Great in November” challenge:

New “Smart Ass Success” Teleseminar Series!

Are You Ready to Finally Figure Out and Get What You Really Want…?

Have you ever set out to try something new, accomplish a goal, fulfill a dream, or take your life or business to the next level? Have you ever done so and achieved less than spectacular results?

Perhaps it was on a birthday, at the start of a new undertaking, or, as we have coming up, at the start of a new year. But you know as well as I that it happens…

I’ve been there, done that. And I know that quite often, as excited as we are and as well-intentioned as our plans are, more often than not, very little gets done.

Well, I’m finally sick and tired of it, and now I’ve put together a program to combat the, “lots of hoping and talk with little results” syndrome!

If you’ve read my “Smart Ass Success!” e-book, then you know that I have put together a seven step system that helps people figure out what they want and then helps them actually get it. (If you haven’t read it, you can get your free copy here: Smart Ass Success E-Book)

Now, as we approach the end of the year when people start putting together another set of plans, dreams, and “resolutions,” I am offering something to make sure that THIS year you actually get what you really want:

The Smart Ass Success Teleseminar Series

This is a seven part Teleseminar series, one each week for seven weeks, where we’ll cover, in detail, the seven steps you need to take to figure out and get what you really want.

Seven Topics, Seven Experts

However, you won’t just be getting me on all seven calls. Instead, I have found six brilliant experts who have agreed to share their wisdom, experience, and advice! (plus, I will be an expert for one of the calls)

On each call, I will interview a different expert who will give in-depth information and share specific actions you can take to make sure that *this time* you follow through and achieve the things you truly want in life.

For a complete list of topics and experts, visit the site:
Smart Ass Success Teleseminar Series

Two Options, One Free, One Paid!

This is extremely valuable information, and I want to share it with as many people as possible. At the same time, I want to make some money for myself (this is my business, after all).

To that end, I have decided to offer this program in two forms, one free and one paid.

Free: For no cost at all, everyone is welcome to listen in to the calls each week. Just enter your email to get the call-in information

Paid: For one low fee, you get access to all the calls, plus a few additional things:

  • MP3 recordings of each call so if you can’t make the scheduled time or want to re-listen, you can
  • PDF transcriptions of each call (for people who prefer to read)
  • Over $80 of fabulous bonuses from our various experts

Whether you opt for the paid or no-cost version, this is going to be a phenomenal program with some incredibly useful information.

RIP Steve Jobs – 5 Lessons We Can All Learn from an Innovative iCon

As you have probably heard by now, Steve Jobs, entrepreneur, innovator, and co-founder of Apple, died yesterday.

It’s quite a loss, not just to the technology world, but to the world as a whole. Apple’s products, driven by Jobs, truly changed so much about how we live our day to day lives.

There’s going to be a lot said and written about Jobs in the next few days. For my part, I’d like to use this opportunity to share five lessons from Steve Jobs life that can help all of us live our own lives to the fullest:

Start Early, Stay Late

“So it’s a lot of hard work and it’s a lot of worrying constantly and if you don’t love it, you’re going to fail.”
-Steve Jobs

I’ve read a lot of profiles recently of people who started companies from humble beginnings that grew to change the world. The one thing they all have in common is that they all worked damn hard.

Waking up early, staying up late, working weekends, doing whatever it took to get the job done and grow the company.

I am a strong believer in work/life balance, so I am not suggesting that you start working 100-hour weeks. Unless you want to build the next Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, etc., you don’t have to give up your entire life for work.

However, success has a cost. Too many people want to be more successful, make more money, make an impact on the world, etc. but are unwilling to pay that price.

Cost can come in many forms, but the most common one, and the one that most people are unwilling to pay, is time. You may fin some shortcuts to success, but at the end of the day you’re going to have to put your ass in the chair, or hit the streets, or spend hours in the studio. There’s no getting around it.

Question: Are you really putting in the time to achieve what you want? Or are you half-assing it, waiting for success to find you?

Action: Make a commitment right now to pay the price to achieve the things you want. Then pay that price, every day. If you are not willing to commit, that’s ok; you’ll just have figured out that that goal was not as important to you as you thought. Now you can let it go and figure out what you really want.

Understand Your Customer

“…it’s not about convincing people that they want something they don’t. We figure out what we want. And I think we’re pretty good at having the right discipline to think through whether a lot of other people are going to want it, too. That’s what we get paid to do. So you can’t go out and ask people, you know, what’s the next big [thing]? There’s a great quote by Henry Ford who said, “If I’d have asked my customers what they wanted, they would have told me ‘A faster horse.”
-Steve Jobs

Along with his charisma, I think Steve Jobs’ greatest business strength was his ability to get inside the minds of his customers.

Time and again, Apple put out products that customers went wild for, even though they may not have made much sense before hand!

At times it seemed like Jobs understood his customers better than they understood themselves. Rather than giving them what they wanted, he gave them what they would want when they saw it.

I used to own a very old-school basic cell phone. Before I bought the iPhone, I said to myself, “I know I don’t need an iPhone, but I also know that once I get one I won’t be able to live without it.”

I was right. I love my iPhone now, and can’t imagine not having it (or one like it).

While PC folks were making functional hardware that often required an engineering degree to figure out (thank God I have one!) Jobs knew that customers would care about (and pay a premium for) design, simplicity, and stability.

It was against what other companies were doing, but Jobs understood his customers. And that made a huge impact on Apple and the world.

Question: How well do you understand your customer? Even if you don’t own a business or work in sales, you interact with others. How well do you understand them? Can you get inside their minds?

Action: First, figure out who your “customer” is. Second, understand them as deeply as you can. Third, ask yourself not only, “What do they want,” but also, “What will they/could they/would they want?”

Have an Unwavering Belief in Yourself and Your Dream

“People say you have to have a lot of passion for what you’re doing and it’s totally true. And the reason is because it’s so hard that if you don’t, any rational person would give up. It’s really hard. “
-Steve Jobs

The thing that fascinates me about Jobs, and about all the innovators who have gone on to achieve great things, is that they 100% absolutely believe in themselves and what they are doing.

If you listen to any of these people in an interview, there is no doubt in their mind about the course they are on. There is no ambiguity. They don’t hem-and-haw or hedge their bets.

Even if time proves them wrong, they pick themselves up (see the next point) and move on to the next idea with the same level of certainty and confidence.

This doesn’t apply to just people on Jobs’ level. The most successful small business owners and salespeople I know have this same belief. This doesn’t mean they’re arrogant jackasses; they just belief in themselves and their ideas to their core.

Question: How strongly do you believe in what you are doing? When someone asks you about your business, your job, your hobby, or your passion, are you uncertain, or are you confident? Do you doubt, or are you a believer?

Action: This point, more than any other, will determine your likelihood of success. The road to success is often long and hard. If you don’t believe in yourself 100%, you won’t have the fortitude to keep going (see next point). Moreover, if you don’t believe in yourself, why would anyone else?

Keep At It

“That’s the moment that an artist really decides who he or she is. If they keep on risking failure, they’re still artists.”
-Steve Jobs

Apple seems to keep rolling out hit after hit. It’s almost as if Steve Jobs could do no wrong.

But that’s not true. At least, it certainly hasn’t been the case in the past. The Lisa, Apple TV, and the G4 Cube are a few of Jobs’ failures.

Oh, and being removed from the company he founded in 1986 could be considered a pretty big setback too…

In the face of all of these, Jobs could have quit. Instead, he kept going with the next idea, the next innovation, the next product, or the next company.

As a result, he ended up with a stake in Pixar, Disney, and then again back with Apple. Oh, and he made an obscene amount of money doing it.

Question: How do you respond when setbacks happen (Ding!)? Do you quit, or do you persist?

Action: Stay the course! Of course you can and should make adjustments, but don’t give up if and when things don’t go your way. Move on to the next idea, the next innovation, the next product, or the next company.

Be Nice

“If you want to hire bright and creative people, you can’t over rule them. You can do that once or twice a year.”
-Steve Jobs

Jobs wasn’t perfect. In his first run at Apple, he had a reputation for being…ah…a bit of an unbalanced tyrant who would rip people apart.

However, after his (potentially humbling) ouster from Apple in 1986, and his subsequent re-hiring (via Apple’s acquisition of NeXT) in 1996, Jobs appeared to be a little more mellow.

At an interview at the D Conference, Jobs said, “If you want to hire bright and creative people, you can’t over rule them. You can do that once or twice a year.”

He was still driven, but he seemed to be more open and collaborative. This may be a case of correlation, not causation, but it was in Jobs’ second, slightly softer, tenure that Apple grew to be the most highly valued company in the world.

Question: Are you running roughshod over people to achieve what you want? Are you so focused on what you want and what you think is your best path to get there that you aren’t paying attention to the human element?

Action: Think collaborative and open. Be driven and push others, but don’t be such a jackass that people are afraid to bump into you on the elevator…Not only do you need other people’s help, but the help they provide could improve upon your original idea.

Rest in Peace Steve, you will be missed.

Success Key: Seducing Lady Luck into Smiling at You

Lady Luck is a fickle mistress. Some days she loves you, and some days she treats you like she just caught you knocking boots with her best friend in the broom closet.

Most days though, she just ignores you.

This is unfortunate, because as much as we all want success to be a simple formula – “follow steps X, Y, and Z, and success happens” – the truth of the matter is that “making it” usually relies on a fair dose of luck.

I read a great post about this on author J.A. Konrath’s blog which was simply titled, “How to Succeed.” It’s written as advice for aspiring novelists, but the advice applies to pretty much anyone. You can read it here:

How to Succeed

If you didn’t read it, I’ll sum it up for you, since Konrath just offers one piece of advice over and over:

Keep at it long enough until you get lucky.

Want to succeed as a novelist and sell thousands of books and make your living writing? The secret is to keep at it long enough until you get lucky.

The same applies to any endeavor worth pursuing. You just have to have the stamina, persistence, and willingness to keep at it long enough until you get lucky.

Sometimes the path is short and quick, and sometimes it is long and difficult. You never know when you start out. The key is to keep at it until you get lucky.

People who succeed are the ones who eventually have Lady Luck smile on them. People who fail are the ones who give before she has a chance to pay them any heed.

Yes, your talent, character, and hard work matter. But at the end of the day, your success will happen when the right combination of events, individuals, and timing come together.

To quote from Konrath’s blog:

Q: Aren’t talent and hard work more important than luck?

Joe: They can help you get lucky.

The nice thing is that, as Konrath says, you can do things to help you get lucky. Here are three things you can do to make it more likely that Lady Luck will turn her success-bringing smile your way:

1) Get Better

Try not to be offended by what I am about to say here:

You can be better.

How can I say that, since chances are I have no idea how good you are right now? Easy. Because everyone can be better.

The first mistake that people make when trying to achieve their goals is that they overestimate just how good they are. If I had a nickel for every person I came across who thought they were better than they were, I would have a veritable plethora of nickels, indeed. These people think, “I’m awesome! If I could just get a shot, I would be fine!”

Maybe. Or maybe that “shot” would let people see how average you are. Or maybe that “shot” already happened, and you didn’t even realize it.

Yes, sometimes horribly untalented people get lucky and succeed, and sometimes amazingly talented people languish in obscurity, but overall, the better you are, the more likely you are to generate that luck that you need to be successful. You’ll also be much more able to seize that opportunity when luck sends it your way.

Question: What are you doing today, and everyday, to get better?

2) Put Yourself Out There

The second mistake people make is that they expect success to come to them. No one is looking for you! No one is going to knock on your door out of the blue and just drop off a golden ticket for you! (Even Charlie of Willy Wonka fame had to buy a chocolate bar – a dubious financial decision at the time, but hey, at least he tried…)

If you want to get lucky, you have to let people know who you are.

Some people long for success but then never do anything about it:

  • They write a great resume but never send it to anyone.
  • They never pitch their great business idea to investors.
  • They never fill out a job or school application.
  • They never submit a proposal for a project they want.
  • They never post their writing in a place where others can see it.
  • They never put any time or effort into marketing their product.

It doesn’t matter how good you are. If no one knows about you, you’ll never be found. You have to be out there if you want luck to find you.

Question: What are you doing today, and everyday, to put yourself out there?

3) Increase Your Output

The more you produce the more chances you have of getting lucky. It’s just that simple.

Contact one potential employer, and you have a shot at getting a good job. Contact one-hundred, and you have ninety-nine more chances.

I have seen people take one shot at something, not get the result they want, and then give up. After one try. That’s worse than putting all your eggs in one basket. That’s like only having one egg to begin with, then trying to carry it home balancing it on your nose, and then, when it falls and breaks, running home and crying about how unfair the world is for not recognizing your genius.

Crazy.

If you are good (and getting better) and if you are putting yourself out there, the best way to increase your chances of getting lucky is to increase your output.

Write more. Apply more. Network more. Submit more. Ask more. Speak more.

Don’t burn yourself out, but simply ask yourself, am I really doing enough to maximize my chances of getting lucky?

Question: What are you doing today, and everyday, to increase your output?

I truly hope you are fortunate enough to have Lady Luck beam at you quick and early on your path. For the rest of you (and by “you” I mean “us”), follow J.A. Konrath’s simple advice: keep at it long enough until you get lucky.

And now I leave you with a simple line from the original blog post:

“You can quit if you want to. Or you can stick with it until you get lucky.”

The choice is yours…

Sometimes the things you think make you successful may be the very things that are actually holding you back.

Crazy? Maybe. But that doesn’t mean it’s not true.

I was reminded of this idea after watching a video of comedian Louis C.K. speak at a tribute to George Carlin that a friend sent me. You can see it here:

(Warning! There is a lot of profanity in this. If you don’t like that, or are in an environment where it would be bad for someone to hear the “F” and “S” words emitting from your speakers, well, then you may not want to hit “play.” Consider yourself warned.)

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R37zkizucPU#!

It starts out pretty funny, with Louis making fun of clowns (because, hey, “why not?”).

Then he talks about how he got started in comedy…

After 15 years of performing the same jokes and routine over and over he wasn’t really getting anywhere. One day he listened to George Carlin talk about his act, and he was stunned to hear that Carlin would write a brand new act and throw away the old one every year.

Many comedians (and speakers) would tell you this was crazy, since the common wisdom is that you work your existing material until it is perfect, and then you stick with that.

Not George Carlin. He decided that by creating a new act every year it would:

  1. Keep him fresh and excited.
  2. Give him something to look forward to every year.

Louis was one of those comedians who was afraid of doing this. He had been telling the same jokes for 15 years, after all.

However, his career was nowhere and he was willing to try anything. He did it, and he continues to do it, and since he made that commitment, he has seen much more success than he ever did in the 15 years he spent telling the same jokes.

That’s pretty damn powerful.

It’s also something we can all learn from.

You may not be a stand up comedian, but chances are you have some things in your life that you have been doing the same way for a very long time. And you continue to do them because they work for you.

However, those same things you do that work for you may very well be the things that are holding you back from achieving an even higher level of success and happiness.

Take a look at any area where you are not as successful as you would like to be. Then take an honest look at how you have been approaching that area. Have you basically been trying the same thing over and over, or just slightly tweaking and adjusting your approach, hoping for a big change?

If so, consider throwing away everything and starting over:

  • Been trying unsuccessfully to lose weight for years? Throw away everything you are trying and have tried to lose weight and start with a blank slate. Make a new plan that is completely different than anything you have done before.
  • Been struggling to build your business? Throw away your marketing plan. Start completely from scratch and ask, “What can I do to make my business successful now?”
  • Been trying to find a new job? Stop visiting all the same web sites. Throw away your resume and build a new one from scratch. Heck, throw away what you think you want as a job and ask yourself, “What do I really want to do?” (Note: If you’re unsure, check out my Mining Your Gold program).

This is all based on a simple fact: if what you’ve been doing hasn’t been working, then you should try something different.

Beyond that, as with Carlin, even if things have been working, throwing it away and starting over can help you be even better.

Throwing away everything and starting over can be a very scary thing.

And I am not saying you apply this idea arbitrarily. So no, you don’t have to leave your spouse, quit the job you are happy at, and sell your house.

That’s silly.

Start with an area of your life you are unhappy with. Start with something small. And start out in the “thought phase,” where you simply are willing, in your own head, to throw everything away and start over.

It worked for George Carlin, it works for Louis C.K., and it can work for you.

Friday Web Roundup: Talent and Vendors, Harassing Debt Collectors, Suing For Lack of Sex, Losing a Gold Medal Because of a Ponytail, and Darth Vader’s Ridiculousness

It’s Friday! Stop doing work and start checking out some fun links from around the interwebs…

Talent and Vendors

Here’s a post from Seth Godin’s blog about the difference between a “talent” and a “vendor.”

From the post: “That’s the key economic argument for the distinction: if you treat an artist like a vendor, you’ll often get mediocre results in return. On the other hand, if you treat a vendor like an artist, you’ll waste time and money.”

It’s an interesting distinction, and it may make you re-think how you approach some of your “vendor” relationships.

Worst Customer Service Ever?

This is an article from CNN.com about institutions collecting debts from family members after the original borrower passes away.

Scroll down to heading that says, “Hey Social Security, I’m not dead!” and you’ll read the story of a woman who received harassing phone calls every 15 minutes at her husband’s wake!

She continued to get the calls, as many as 48 a day, and when she called and explained that she would pay as soon as she received her husband’s life insurance check, she was told the calls were computer generated and could not be stopped until the debt was paid.

Wow…just…wow…

If you have a business where you (or someone) can’t override an automated harassing message, either you’re lying or grossly incompetent. And I’m not sure which one is worse.

Frenchman Ordered to Pay Wife Damages for Lack of Sex

Headline kind of says it all. Looks like you really can sue for anything.

I don’t know if there’s a business of life lesson here. I just thought the story needed to be shared.

Missed it by a Hair – Literally

Crazy story here of a Belarusian long jumper who missed out on winning the gold medal at the world championships because her hair – which was in a ponytail – touched the ground behind her. Her actual jump distance was good enough for gold, but her hair set her back 0.16 meters which was enough to let someone else take first place. The article did point out the winning jumper had her hair up in a bun.

Let that be a lesson to you: The devil is in the details. Don’t let all your hard work be undone by a silly oversight.

From the Funny Nerdy Video File

George Lucas is releasing the original Star Wars Trilogy on Blu-Ray on September 16 and, much to the chagrin of hard-core fans, he once again went back in and made some “improvements.”

One of the improvements is adding a stupid sounding “Nooooooooooo” to Vader at the end of Return of the Jedi (You can see the new clip here: Darth Vader’s ‘Nooo!’ in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi). I’m with the hard-core fans on this one. The new footage looks dumb.

However, from stupidity comes genius. Someone took a bunch of different clips of Darth Vader saying “no,” and “yes,” and mashed them up so it looks like the trailer for the Jim Carrey movie, “Yes Man”. Very funny stuff. Take a look for yourself:

7 Ways to Beat, Avoid, or Make the Most of Procrastination!

I just discovered that today, September 6th, is “Fight Procrastination Day.” I’ve never heard of this day before. Frankly, it sounds like something somebody came up with while they were putting off doing real work.

Whatever its origin, it seems like a nice launching point for an article about procrastination

I originally though about making the entire post:

“Today is Fight Procrastination Day. I’ll write an article about it tomorrow,”

But that would be silly and obvious, and I’m sure many others have made that joke.

Instead, here are 7 simple but effective techniques you can use to beat, avoid, or make the most of procrastination. You may not always win, but you can at least put up a good fight…

1) Get Lazier

If you have a task that consistently comes up that kicks in your “procrastination urge”, then find a workaround. Figure out a way of changing what you do so you don’t have to ever do that task again. For example, if you always procrastinate entering information into your contact database after networking events, then buy a card scanner. Great things have come from focused laziness! (I wrote a post about it here: Achieve More by Being Lazier!)

2) Delegate

Can you get someone else to take on the task you are putting off? There are lots of options:

  • Have an employee do it.
  • Hire an outside expert.
  • Barter tasks with a friend or family member.

Do what you love and find people who love doing what you hate and trade.

3) Ask Yourself, “Do I Really Need to do This?”

Sometimes, if you really think about, you realize you don’t really have to do the thing you are procrastinating. If you have a work related task that your boss told you to do, well, that you’ll have to do. However, there are many things you decide you “should” do. Then you feel guilty when you procrastinate. Let those go! Will the world really end if you take, “re-organize the hall closet” off your “to-do” list?

4) Shrink the Task

The bigger the task you have before you, the greater the urge to procrastinate. Shrink the task until you don’t feel overwhelmed when you think about it. You can literally make the task smaller, or you can break a big task into chunks and just take on the first piece.

5) Ramp Up

Your greatest productivity comes when you tackle your, most important project first. .However, when your energy is low and when procrastination is high, you may find it difficult to get started. In these cases, rather than going from not working at all to working full steam on a big project, start with something easier. I find it a lot easier to get started on a smaller task, and, once I have some momentum, it’s often easier to take on the big task.

6) Learn New Strategies

Why not spend your procrastination time learning how not to procrastinate? Two great books that I have found very helpful on this topic are The Procrastination Equation by Piers Steel and The Now Habit by Neil Fiore.

7) Embrace It

Sometimes you just have to give in to that procrastination urge and put the task off for a day. However, you have to do it right. Too often, the fight with procrastination is a slow depressing one. You stare at your computer screen surfing through Wikipedia for hours. The day ends, and, you feel terrible for having done nothing. If you really want to embrace your procrastination, then when you put off a task, replace it with something truly enjoyable or rewarding. Read a great book. Go connect with a friend you haven’t seen in a while. Work on side project that you are excited about. You’re still procrastinating, but at least you’re using your procrastination time wisely.

There you have it – seven techniques to beat procrastination (or at least make the most of it)! Hope you have a great “Fight Procrastination Day,” and I hope you get a lot done!

(If you use one of the techniques about, or if you use this day to take on a project you have been procrastinating, let me know in the comments!)
