Winners of the “185 Teachers Walk Into a Bar” Contest!

The first ever Motivational Smart Ass contest is now officially over, and we have a winner!

I want to thank everyone who participated. This being my first time trying this, I honestly had no idea how it would go. I’m excited to say that I am super happy with the participation and results!

There were 59 entries! If you missed the original post and want to read all of them, you can do so by clicking here.

Before we get to the winner, I want to give out a few…

Honorable Mentions:

Most Groan Inducing

185 is designed to be a groan eliciting game. But a few went above and beyond:

185 Physics teachers walk into a bar

The bartender says, we don’t serve teachers here

The teachers say “Please.”

The bartender says, “well OK, But I’m keeping my ion you.”

– Palmo

185 osteology teachers walk into a bar. The bartender says, “Sorry, we’re not serving liquor to teachers today.” The teachers say, “How ’bout to marrow?”

– Charlie

185 teachers walk into a bar. the bartender says, “Sorry, we don’t serve teachers here.” But as teachers, we just want you to “Beer all you can Be.”

–  Ruthie

Best Pop Culture Reference

If you’ve read this blog for a bit, you know I love me some pop culture. So I have to reward this one:

185 teachers walk into a bar and the bartender says, “Sorry we don’t serve teachers here.” The teachers say, “Bartender. Bartender. Bartender.” And the bartender finally says, “Here.”

– Rick

(For those not so pop culture inclined, that’s a Ferris Bueller’s Day Off reference).

Nerdiest:

I’m a nerd, so I had to give it up for this one:

185 math teachers walk into a bar

The bartender says, we can only serve 3.14159 of you here

The teachers say “can you repeat that?”

The bartender says, “don’t be irrational – that can’t happen.”

-Palmo

That’s just chock full o’ nerdy goodness!

Greatest Volume

I said you were allowed to submit multiple entries, and some people took that to heart.

The greatest volume, by a landslide,  was Ruthie , with 37(!!). Well done!

Palmo also deserves a shout out for breaking into double digits with 11. Nice!

First Response

Thanks to Michelle for submitting the first entries. It can be a weird to enter a submission onto an empty board, so I a) congratulate for doing it and b) thank you for getting the ball rolling!

The Runner Ups

Lots of great ones to choose from. The following two came oh so close:

185 dyslexic teachers walk into a bra.

– Palmo

(I love this one, but you could swap out teachers with any other profession and it would be the same joke. But it made me laugh…)

185 teachers walk into a bar and start banging into things, walking into walls, accidentally knocking over tables. Finally, the bartender gets pissed and grabs one of the teachers and screams: “What the hell do you guys think you are doing?!?”

The teacher looks up, and freaks out the bartender, showing only white in his eyes.

“Sorry sir,” he says “we have no pupils.”

-Nye

The Winner

And now for your winner:

185 teachers walk into a bar. The bartender says, “Sorry, we don’t serve teachers here. The teacher says, “Yea, a Mind is a terrible thing to be wasted.”

This one is great because it fits in with teachers, it plays off a pop culture reference (the old United Negro College Fund commercials), it uses the double being of the word “wasted,” and it seems obvious after the fact. Plus, it made me think of Dan Quayle, which is inherently funny.

– Ruthie

Congratulations Ruthie, and thanks to everyone who participated!

Monday Motivation – 10 Signs You May Not Be Doing What You Really Want

“Doing what you really want,” sounds great, but it can be a tricky business. You have to figure out what you really want. You need to create a plan to do it. You need to stay on track when things go wrong.

Before you can do any of that, you need to honestly assess whether you really want to be doing what you are currently doing. For some, that’s a no brainer, “yes,” or “no,” answer. For others, there may be a lot more uncertainty.

If you are in that second group, here are 10 signs that you may not be doing what you really want. We all do some, or all, of these things from time to time, but if you find yourself consistently engaging in a few of these, it may be time for a change…

Little Thoughts Keep Popping Up

Sometimes it’s pretty obvious. Throughout your day, whether you are at work or elsewhere, you keep thinking thoughts about leaving your job or doing something different. You may push the thoughts aside or try to ignore them, but they are there for a reason. The next time those thoughts pop up, try to get a better sense of what they trying to tell you.

You Have a “Nagging Feeling” You Can’t Quite Put Your Finger On

The “little thoughts” often come up not in the form of thoughts, but rather as vague feelings. You may have a subtle sense of discomfort or anxiety, but you’re not sure where it’s coming from. Those feelings don’t always mean you are dissatisfied with what you are doing, but they might. If you constantly have a nagging feeling that you can’t place, you may want to take a look at whether you really want to do what you are doing.

You Find Yourself More Prone to Missing Days and Events

This one is easy to miss, because it seems so damned logical. You miss a day of work, or you pass on an additional activity. That makes sense, because your life has gotten busier, right? Maybe. Or maybe you are just not as excited as you used to be. This has happened to me over the years for a variety of things I was doing. After years of full on engagement, I slowly found myself being more willing to miss days, and that was a sign that it might be time to move on.

You Feel De-Energized Before

Whether it’s a job you have, an activity you are engaged in, or a group you volunteer for, if you start to feel de-motivated and anxious before you start, then there is clearly something going on. Regardless of how much you may end up enjoying things once you get there, if you are consistently feeling de-energized beforehand, you may need to evaluate your current interest level.

You Feel De-Energized After

Similar to the last one, if you regularly walk away from work feeling drained, that’s not a good sign. This is not about how hard you work. You can get your ass kicked at work but still love it, and you can expend zero energy and feel completely drained. Don’t worry about logic; ask yourself, “How do I feel at the end of most days?”

You Speak With Ambivalence about What You Do

When someone asks you, “How’s work?” how do you respond? You don’t have to give a chipper, “things are super-double-duper!!” answer (those people creep me out a bit), but if you constantly respond with, “it’s ok,” or, “same old same old,” then something should change. It’s possible you’re not doing the wrong thing and you just need to change your approach or results, but it is worth looking at.

You Never Think Positively about Your Job When You’re Away

What kind of thoughts do you have when you are away from your job? Do you do your best to not think about it at all? Do you think only negative thoughts? If you never have a fond, positive thought about your work when you are away from it, then you need to re-think what you’re doing.

You Give Up on Innovation

Innovation is not just for creative types or inventors. One of the best signs that you are into your work is when you are constantly looking for ways to do it better. These don’t have to be huge innovations; small little improvements are great. However, when you resign yourself to just do what you’re told, how you’re told, in the way it’s always been done, you’ve most likely given up your passion for the work.

You Lose Your Passion for Learning or Improvement

Do you have any desire to learn more about your work and get better? People who are doing what they really want are always looking for ways to improve. They love to immerse themselves in the work and discover new things. If you don’t care about these things at all, then you may need a new path.

Your Goal is to “Not Fail” as Opposed to “Pass With Flying Colors”

What are your current work goals? Do you want to just do a good enough job to not get fired (or reprimanded, or yelled at), or do you attack your day trying to do the best job possible? “Getting by” is not a habit of people who are on the right path, doing what they truly want.

In Conclusion

Change is hard, and it’s usually easier and more comfortable to keep the status quo, even if change would be much better for us in the long run. The first step in making a change is simply noticing that it’s needed. Use the ten signs above and, if they start to seem a little familiar, be willing to have the courage to take the actions you need to make a change now to ensure yourself a great future!

Friday Web Roundup

I tend to surf the web more than I should (you might call it, “procrastinating”). Rather than letting all that idle time be a complete waste, I decided to compile the interesting stuff I came across and share it with you.

Enjoy!

TroloLord of the Rings

Just for fun, here’s a video that combines two of my favorite things:

  1. The Lord of the Rings movies.
  2. The Trololo Guy internet meme.

Marine Lands Date with Mila Kunis

Here’s a cool story about a Marine who made a YouTube video asking actress Mila Kunis to his Marine Corps. Ball. The video went viral, and Mila said yes!

There’s a cool lesson about saying, “Yes, And” here:

  1. The marine said, “Yes, And” to himself and went ahead and posted the video, even though it was a ridiculous long-shot and he could have gotten teased for it.
  2. Mila said, “Yes, And” to his offer even though she doesn’t know him and gets no direct benefit from it.

As a result of saying, “Yes, And,” the marine got a date with Mila Kunis and Mila Kunis has gotten a ton of positive press.

Yes And can be a very powerful thing indeed…

10 Reasons You Hate to Cook

Frankly, I don’t really care if you hate to cook. However, this is an interestingly article. When you look closely at it, you realize that all ten reasons can be boiled down to three things:

  1. You’re not good at it (so learn, practice, and get better)
  2. You have the wrong materials – tools and food (so learn what you need and get them)
  3. You set your expectations too high (so lower the bar and go for smaller wins to build experience and momentum)

Those three reasons can pretty much explain why you hate doing anything. So, if there’s something you hate doing but want to or need to do, then learn how to do it and get better, make sure you have the right equipment, and focus on small wins. Simple, right?

Harry Potter Humor

Another nerdy funny one. Since the newest (and last) Harry Potter movie comes out today, I figure why not end with a good bit of Harry Potter humor?

90% of Everything is Cr@#!

I recently heard about a little thing called Sturgeon’s Law, which states:

90% of everything is crap

That’s it. Short, to the point, and fairly accurate.

(Pardon the language; it’s not me, that’s actually what the law says.)

To be fair, this is not a law in the same way that “if you jump off a building you accelerate towards the ground at 9.81 m/s2 until you go SPLAT!” is a law. Rather, it’s just a cool thing some dude named Sturgeon said a while ago that people really liked.

From Wikipedia:

“The phrase was derived from Sturgeon’s observation that while science fiction was often derided for its low quality by critics, it could be noted that the majority of examples of works in other fields could equally be seen to be of low quality and that science fiction was thus no different in that regard to other art.”

From Sturgeon himself:

“I repeat Sturgeon’s Revelation, which was wrung out of me after twenty years of wearying defense of science fiction against attacks of people who used the worst examples of the field for ammunition, and whose conclusion was that ninety percent of SF is crud. Using the same standards that categorize 90% of science fiction as trash, crud, or crap, it can be argued that 90% of film, literature, consumer goods, etc. are crap. In other words, the claim (or fact) that 90% of science fiction is crap is ultimately uninformative, because science fiction conforms to the same trends of quality as all other artforms”

What Does This Have to Do With You?

Whether you agree with the exact “90%” number, you probably agree that a large percentage of stuff you come across is crap.

  • 90% of the websites and blogs out there are crap
  • 90% of the stuff on TV is crap
  • 90% of the books being published are crap
  • 90% of the service providers you might choose to hire are crap.

That may seem harsh, but, if anything, the ability of the internet to allow anyone and everyone to get their voice out there, hang a shingle, and proclaim themselves an “expert” or a “professional,” has made Sturgeon’s Law truer now than when good ol’ Sturgy coined it in the first place. With so few barriers to entry, anyone, regardless of quality, can get their stuff out there.

If you accept the premise that 90% of everything is crap, then you can make three important adjustments to accelerate your path to success:

1) Be Committed to Being in the Top 10%

Here’s a tough question: With what you do, are you in the top 10%, or are you in the 90% crap?

Are you sure?

Are you positive…?

Maybe you are, maybe you’re not. But I know one thing: everyone can get better and better at their craft, so whether you think you are in the top 10% or not, resolve to get even better.

Being “better than average,” sucks. If you want to do something great, then do what it takes to be in the 10% of everything that doesn’t suck.

2) Don’t Discount New Experiences Too Quickly

I applaud you for trying new things – workout routines, books, cuisines, jobs, hobbies, etc. However, too many people are willing to write of an entire category of experience just because things didn’t go well the first time.

“Oh, I tried sushi once, and it was awful. I’ll never try it again!” Really? You’ll discount all sushi forever because of one bad experience? Maybe it was a bad restaurant. Maybe the chef was off. Maybe you just picked a bad roll.

Remember, if 90% of everything is crap, then there’s a good chance that your first experience with something new may fall into the crap category.

Be persistent and try, try again (at least once or twice).

3) Develop Resources to Find the Top 10%

While the internet has accelerated the speed of “crap proliferation,” it has also given us more resources than ever to filter out that crap.

I firmly believe that one of the most useful skills a professional can have, right now, is the ability to find, filter, process, and apply information from the internet.

The answers are out there. You just need to find it, and then be able to filter the 90% crap out so only the beautiful 10% remains.

I am constantly stunned by people who either:

  1. Seem paralyzed by a lack of information when they could easily find the info they need on-line
  2. Believe everything they come across on-line

There is a delicate balance you must find. Become an internet archeologist and learn how to search for information and develop skills and sensitivity to discern the garbage from the valuable information.

There are a lot of ways to do this, and it takes some practice, but here are three to get you started:

Find review and aggregate sites that you trust – If you follow certain bloggers or certain sites, you get a handle on how their ratings and recommendations go. With a handful of sites you trust, you can let other people do the filtering for you.

  • Learn how to read between the lines Don’t believe everything you read online! After you spend a lot of time looking for info, you’ll be able to tell when people are exaggerating, being intentionally vague, or not telling you the full story. Fine tune your “B.S.” detector and you will be able to find that key 10%.
  • Look for corroboration – Just because one site says something, that doesn’t mean it’s true. Unless something makes a lot of sense to you, I would avoid buying in to a lone claim out there online. See if other reputable sources are saying similar things.

Of course, you also want to be able to find the top 10% offline too, and the principles are the same. Find trusted sources, learn to read between the lines, and look for corroboration.

In Conclusion

Sturgeon’s Law is not an absolute. Heck, it might not even be remotely true. However, if you act like it is and take the three steps listed above (make sure you are in the top 10%, don’t discount new experiences too quickly, and develop the ability to find the top 10%), you will improve your chances of standing out from the crowd and succeeding at whatever you do.

MSA Contest: Win a Book! (“185 Teachers Walk Into a Bar…”)

It’s Contest Time!

As you may or may not know, my background is in improv comedy. As a professional speaker, I show audiences how they can use improv comedy ideas to think quickly, communicate better, and react quickly to change. I wrote a book on it – Improvise to Success – and now you have a chance to win a copy for free!

That’s right, to try something different here at the Motivational Smart Ass, I have decided to run an improv comedy themed contest!

The contest is based on an improv game called 185.

In the game, the performers take a suggestion and turn it into a “stock” joke. The format of the joke is:
“185 _______’s walk into a bar.
The bartender says “Sorry, we don’t serve ______’s here.
The _______’s say “[insert punchline].”

Example:

Topic: Bananas
185 bananas walk into a bar.
The bartender says, “Sorry, we don’t serve bananas.”
The bananas say, “Oh why not, can’t you see we have so much appeal!”

Get it? Appeal. As in, “peal.” Bananas have peals…

Here’s another one:

Topic: Doctors
185 doctors walk into a bar.
The bartender says, “Sorry, we don’t serve doctors.”
The doctors say, “But all we wanted was a shot!

Get it? Shots. Because doctors administer shots. And a shot is also a type of drink.

Yes, these are groan inducing jokes usually filled with puns. That’s the point.

In this contest, all you have to do is come up with a punchline for a 185 joke. I’ll provide the topic.

Your 185 contest topic: Teachers.

(Yes, this is in honor of a friend of mine. You know who you are…)

Here are the simple rules:

  1. Post your best 185 in the comments below.
  2. Remember, it will be “185 Teachers walk into a bar. The bartender says ‘sorry, we don’t serve teachers here.’ The teacher’s say, ‘[punchline]’”
  3. Feel free to tweak the format of the 185 joke if it makes your line funnier.
  4. Puns, play on words, double entendres, etc. are all welcome – the more groan inducing, the better.
  5. Keep it PG though, please. I’ll delete out any offensive submissions.
  6. You can post as many submissions as you like
  7. You have until 11:59 PM, Monday night.
  8. I will pick a winner based on a vague criteria that involves how funny it is, originality, and which one happens to tickly my fancy.
  9. In order to win, you can’t post anonymously – I need your email to let you know you won, and make sure it is you (no one else can see your email address)
  10. Whether you post a submission or not, feel free to comment on other people’s submissions and lobby for which one you think it the best (positive only please – I’ll delete out any negative comments on people’s ideas.)
  11. I’ll announce the winner on Tuesday (subscribe to the blog via RSS or email to see who wins!).
  12. Winner gets a copy of my book, Improvise to Success! If you’re in the U.S. you have your choice of a physical book or PDF. International winners get the PDF.

This is what you're playing for...

That’s it! Do your best, don’t over think it, and most importantly, have fun!

Monday Motivation: 23 Reasons that Person You’re Jealous of is More Successful Than You

1) They’ve been doing it longer than you – A couple of years can make e big difference.

2) They woke up earlier – You can get a lot done with an extra hour a day.

3) They stayed up later – Ditto.

4) They worked harder – Hate to say it, but a little elbow grease goes a long way. Half-assing it will only get you halfway there.

5) They worked smarter – Better plans, more focus, smarter decisions. Over time, it all adds up.

6) They had more fun – Yup, the more fun you have, the more motivated, creative, and productive you are. The more people want to work with, hire, and promote you.

7) They said “Yes, And” – To the right stuff, to opportunities, to taking calculated risks, to trying new things that aligned with their long term vision.

7) They said, “No.” – To the wrong stuff. To the stuff that was way out of line with what they wanted. To things that would suck their time, energy, and money from what was truly important.

8 ) They practiced delayed gratification –“Less fun now, massive fun later,” or “more fun now, massive suckitude later”? It’s your choice…

9) They made the right connections – It’s not what you know, it’s who you know (and who knows you). Knowing the right people can make a huge difference.

10) They got lucky – Yeah, it happens. Get over it and go make your own damned luck.

11) They got “bullet proof” – People who can’t take (and learn from) criticism and rejection give up or just “play it safe.” Get a Teflon skin and feedback and rejection become a competitive advantage.

12) They took care of the details – I’m a big picture guy, but even I know details matter. You can have a great product or service, but if you miss the little things – hitting deadlines, being pleasant to work with, sending thank you notes etc – then you’re not going anywhere.

13) They prioritized – Some things matter more than others, and it’s not always obvious which is which. Figure it out and focus on the more important stuff, and let the other stuff go.

14) They got back up faster than you – Setbacks happen. Everyone is going to stumble, fail, or get rejected once in a while. The question is, “How long are you going to stay down?” Some people stay down forever. Some get back up right away. Which end of that spectrum do you fall?

15) They had a better big picture than you – Your vision for your future is going to push you along and motivate you. Maybe their big picture is more compelling than yours.

16) They focused on their genius – It’s hard to be massively successful when you chase every “bright shiny object” opportunity that comes along. Focus on your genius, let the rest go.

17) They had more “fire in the belly” – Something drove them – a family to support, a dream to fulfill, a message to spread, a competitive spirit, etc. There’s a big difference between, “It would be nice to make this happen,” and “Hell’s Yeah! I am going to do whatever it takes to make this happen!”

18) They gave up on ego – Do you care about being right, acknowledged, and liked, or do you care about getting a result? Sometimes they go hand in hand, but not always.

19) They had help – Very few people “make it” entirely on their own. They probably had a lot of help and support. Go find some yourself.

20) They’re not – Not to let you off the hook, but how do you know that they are successful? Worry about yourself, not others.

21) They sacrificed – Some of the people who have everything you want in one area would be jealous of you in other areas. They made sacrifices. You may not want to make those sacrifices yourself, which is fine. Just look at the whole picture, not just a slice.

22) They didn’t sit around waiting for opportunity to knock – Heard this quote once: “Opportunity doesn’t knock. You knock, and opportunity opens the door.” Stop sitting on your ass waiting for something to happen.

23) They did something – An ounce of something beats a ton of nothing, every time.

Stop being jealous, stop whining, and stop feeling sorry for yourself.

Instead, figure out what they did, figure out what you can do, and then go do it!

4 Ways to Make Your Product as Easy to Sell as an American Flag on the 4th of July!

Selling sucks.

There, I’ve said it. The question now is, “What do we do about it??”

That can be a complicated question, but I have a simple solution: make the selling process as easy on yourself as possible. This past 4th of July Weekend, not only was I reminded of that lesson, but I also learned some ways to make it happen…

A few years ago, I somehow came into the possession of a bunch of American Flags (don’t ask, I can’t quite explain it myself. They somehow came to me while I was on the board of an Indian Association…).

I’m patriotic and all, but I had little need for fifteen smallish American Flags. However, I had no idea what to do with them. Throwing them away was certainly not an option. But who then could I give them to?

Faced with a dilemma for which I had no answer, I did what many people do: I ignored the problem, and hoped it would go away. I stored the flags in a corner of my condo and forgot about them.

My girlfriend recently found the flags and asked about them. I told her the details of my dilemma, and she came up with a brilliant, if obvious solution.

“We should give them away on the 4th of July!”

Of course. So simple – we didn’t need them, so why not share them with people who would did?

On the 4th (which, for international readers who may not know, is American Independence Day), we gathered up our flags and went down to the Ben Franklin Parkway where all of the day’s festivities were taking place.

My girlfriend was carrying the flags (yes, that is my form of chivalry – let her do the heavy lifting…) when, not ten minutes into our excursion, a young voice calls out, “excuse me, can I have one of those flags?”

It was a girl, about 12 years old, asking if she could have one of our flags. I’ll admit, I was a little surprised by the boldness of someone just outright asking if they could have something for free, but more importantly, I was excited.

“Yes, of course!”

We handed her a flag, which then multiplied into four flags so that her family and friends could have one too.

Wow, that was easy!

We walked for two more minutes when another voice called out, “Excuse me! Are you still giving out flags?”

Seems someone had overseen us giving away the first batch, and they wanted in.

“Of course!”

We handed this girl a flag, and gave her two more for her friends.

That was pretty much that. After another five minutes we had distributed the last of our flags.

I didn’t think it would be hard to give flags away on Independence Day, but I didn’t realize it would be that easy. We didn’t even have to walk up to a single person and say, “excuse me, would you like an American Flag?”

Man, I wish I had thought of that myself four years earlier!

After we handed out our last flag, I thought to myself, “Wow, if only all sales and marketing were this easy!”

And then I realized that there are some pretty important lessons any small business person can learn from my experience giving away flags…

1) Find a Hungry, Hungry, Market

Years ago I read a book on product creation, and it used a very simple but effective analogy. The book opened by asking, “If you went fishing one day, what would be the most important thing you would want to guarantee you caught a lot of fish?”

The answer was not “a great fishing rod,” or “perfect bait.” No, the answer was, “a pool of hungry fish.”

Seems obvious, but so many business people (myself included at times) make this mistake. We have a great product, and we create great marketing materials, with brilliant slogans and titles and beautiful websites, but then no one buys.

While all that stuff is great, if you don’t have an existing market that’s hungry for something – specifically, for what you offer – you’ll be fighting an uphill battle.

On the 4th of July, there were literally hundreds of thousands of people hungry for patriotic items. Giving away flags was easy.

In the same way, if you want to make your sales and business life easy, find a big pool of hungry fish and go feed them.

2) Make the Right Offering to that Market

It’s not enough to find a hungry market. You then need to offer them something that they are hungry for.

At this 4th of July celebration, people were hungry for three things: patriotism, entertainment, and food. There were plenty of people offering those things.

However, there were a few really random (to me) businesses with tents set up. One was a home contracting company with multiple displays.

I can’t say whether it was worth it or not because I don’t have access to this company’s numbers. Maybe they generated a ton of sales.

It would seem, however, that the attendees that day were not really looking for newly finished basements. Sure when you have close to a million people walking by, you may still drum up business by sheer volume of numbers. However, that’s a scattered, unfocused approach which is a lot of work for a small payoff.

My friend and fellow speaker Mark LeBlanc talks about finding Pure Groups. A pure group is a group of people where a large majority of them are highly targeted prospects for your business. If you are going to undertake a marketing activity (taking out an ad, speaking, sponsoring, getting a tent or tradeshow booth, etc.) he says to only do so for pure groups. This maximizes your chances of success (and minimizes expenses, since targeted groups are usually smaller and less expensive).

Can you build a successful business going door to door and asking every single person in the world to buy? Sure, but you’ll be knocking on a lot of doors and wasting a lot of time, money, and energy.

You’ll be much better off offering that hungry market what it is actually hungry for. That makes selling a whole lot easier.

3) Be Visible to that Market

We could have had the best flags in the world, but if we had sat inside my condo all day, we would not have given away any. Similarly, if we had walked around with the flags in a sealed bag, no one would have seen them and said, “Hey! Can I have a flag?”

Once you have an appropriate offering for a hungry market, all you need to do is get yourself in front of that market.

There is no universal best way to do this. Your job is to figure out where your hungry target market goes to find information to make a buying decision, and then put yourself there.

This is where a lot of small business blow it. People sometimes ask me, “Should I start a blog to help my business?” You would think my answer would be “Yes, of course!”

It’s not. My response is always, “It depends. Is your target market, the people who are going to actually pay you money, reading blogs to make a buying decision?”

There are a lot of people online, looking for information, and reading blogs. However, there are still a lot of people, for whatever reason, who aren’t.

Don’t get sucked in by new technology or marketing methods that people rave about.

Instead, find out how your target market makes buying decisions and use those methods to reach them.

4) Set the Right Price for that Market

Here’s an addendum: I know the skeptics right now are reading this thinking, “Yeah, but you gave away the flags for free! You didn’t actually sell anything!”

Yes, giving stuff away for free is easier than asking people to pay money. So price matters.

However, the principles are the same – find a hungry market, offer them something they are hungry for, and get in front of them. Once you are there, you can go one of three ways:

  1. If you are the only option, charge whatever you want. This is why concert and sporting venues can charge $7 for a Miller Lite…
  2. If you are looking for leads and have more to sell, price a bit lower. This only really works if you are collecting contact info at the sale (like when you sell online), but if you have a big back end sale, you may want to price your initial offering a little lower to get people into your funnel.
  3. If you want to maximize profit in this sale, or if you can not collect contact info, or if you have no follow up sales, then you have to play the “supply and demand game.” See what the competition is charging and then go with your best guess – seriously, it’s as much an art as it is a science (especially in the small business world, where you won’t have access to reams of data and a team of people to analyze it). Aim a smidge higher, as it creates the perception of value and increases your net; you can always discount later.

As in the other three steps, price is also dependent on your target market. If you charge way more than your target is expecting to spend, then you’ll meet resistance. If you charge way less than your target is expecting to spend, then you’ll also meet resistance.

Not that you can’t overcome these resistances, but if you want to make your sales life easier (and it’s not part of your strategy to intentionally be outside the range), consider fitting in the range of expectations.

In Conclusion

Who knew hanging out on a holiday weekend could be so educational? (Ok, I guess I did, since I wrote a blog post about it just last week: 11 Ways to Come Out of a Long Weekend Without Feeling Like a Waste of Humanity).

If you are a small business owner, or if you have a message to spread, event to promote, or cause to champion, then use the lessons in this post to make your sales, marketing, and business life much easier.

Find a hungry market, make them the right offer, get yourself in front of them, and set the right price.

Do those things and yes, your product or service will be as easy to sell as American Flags on the 4th of July!

Monday Motivation: Achieve More by Being Lazier!

What’s that? A Monday Motivation post where I am encouraging you to be lazier?

Yup. But not just lazier. I want you to be both smarter and lazier

I once read about a German General (General Helmuth von Moltke) who classified his officers into four categories:

  • Stupid and Lazy
  • Stupid and Hard-Working
  • Smart and Hard-Working
  • Smart and Lazy

Interestingly, his breakdown of the pros and cons of each type were not what you might expect:

  • Stupid and Lazy – He didn’t mind these types. Stupid people can be dangerous, but since they’re lazy they don’t do much, which means they don’t cause too many problems. These people don’t hurt much, and work pretty well when told specifically what to do. He would give them simple, non-critical tasks.  Curious how two typically “negative” traits can lead to an ok worker…
  • Stupid and Hard-Working – These are the most dangerous types of workers. They are dumb, but like to be very active, so they put lots of their stupidity into action. His advice is to get rid of them immediately. Obviously there’s more to success than just “working hard.”
  • Smart and Hard-Working – You would think this would be the best one, right? Smart and hard-working are the two positive traits. While they play a useful role, these are the officers he would use as managers. They are good at getting things done in the right way.
  • Smart and Lazy – You guessed it; smart and lazy is the best combo! Why is that? Simple: because the smart person does the right thing, but his laziness makes him seek out easier, more efficient, higher ROI ways of accomplishing those things. The smart and lazy person is the innovator.

To summarize, the best were smart and lazy, the worst were stupid and hard working.

Which Are You?

We are mostly taught the value of hard work, and I am not here to dispute that. However, if you are working too hard for the results you are getting, then I suggest you put your intelligence (and I am assuming that you are in the “smart,” and not “stupid” category) into finding ways of being lazier.

Take a step back and ask yourself:

  • How can I achieve the same results with less effort?
  • How can I get a greater return on my energy, money, and time by prioritizing, delegating, and hiring out?
  • What can I automate or eliminate to make my life easier?
  • How can I “multiply myself?” Not in a creepy, “Michael Keaton in Multiplicity” sort of way, but in a “let me reach more people in less time” sort of way.
  • Are there areas in my life I am “saving money” by doing things myself, and would I still consider it saving money if I didn’t value my time at $0?
  • What have I been doing the same way for so long that I need to pause for a moment and say, “is this really the best way to be doing this?

Laziness is usually considered a negative thing. I suppose it is, when you consider it “lazy and stupid.” If you’re lazy and stupid, well, you’re not going to get very far in life.

However, if you could indulge that lazy feeling and apply just a bit of intelligence you may find better, faster, cheaper, and more lucrative ways of doing things. And that, my friends, should be very motivating…
