What question are people out there asking that you, or your business, are the answer to? Do you know? If so, is it the question you want to be the answer to?
I am a huge fan of Fox’s 24. I tore through season one on DVD eight years ago and have been addicted ever since. Sadly, this season has, um, kind of sucked (though in fairness, this week’s episode brought a glimmer of hope that it may get better).
I was recently listening to Bill Simmons (who I have written about earlier in my Crunch Time Leadership post) talk about the show, and he said, “all I know is if Freddie Prinze Jr. is the answer, you’re asking the wrong question.”
Now that’s funny, and that’s why I love Bill Simmons.
To be honest, Freddie Prinze Jr. isn’t so bad on the show, and he is far from the worst thing. But that quote got me thinking: what question am I the answer to? What question are you the answer to? What question do you want to be the answer to?
For me, as a motivational humorist, I’d like to be the answer to the question, “what’s the best way we can add humor and energy to our event while still teaching our people some simple and useful things?” As a blogger, it would be, “where can I go to laugh and learn at the same time?”
It seems simple, but it really makes you think. Some businesses are satisfied with being the answer to, “where can we go for average service and ok prices?” Or, “what is the closest location I can get what I need?” Do you see the difference between these and, “where can we go for amazing service at great prices?” and, “what business would I go twenty minutes out of my way to use?”
Don’t be a Freddie Prinze Jr.; be the answer to the right question.
So again I ask you, “what question are you the answer to?”

Avish,
This is a fantastic post! Knowing the question you want to be the answer to helps you so much in your business or your life and it also leads you to ask “Who is asking that question right now and how to I connect with them?”
Thank you!
Jim
Thanks Jim! I love the add-on point about thinking about who is asking that question and how can I connect with them – that is a great way to identify a target market!

Petang menjelang malam itu, hujan turun perlahan. Raka
berdiri di dekat jendela kafe, menunggu seseorang.
Tak lama kemudian, Nadia datang dengan senyum hangat.
“Maaf terlambat,” katanya sambil menarik kursi di
dekat Raka.
Raka hanya tersenyum. Aroma parfumnya yang lembut membuat suasana
terasa semakin intim. Mereka berbicara tentang kenangan lama, sesekali tertawa ketika tatapan mereka bertemu.
Ketika kafe mulai kosong, Nadia mengulurkan tangannya.
Raka menyambutnya. Jari-jari mereka bertaut, sementara suara hujan menjadi iringan yang
menenangkan.
Mereka kemudian berjalan keluar bersama. Di bawah satu payung, langkah mereka semakin berdekatan. Nadia menatap Raka cukup lama.
“Aku senang malam ini,” bisiknya.
Raka tersenyum dan mendekat sedikit. Untuk beberapa detik, dunia seakan berhenti di antara mereka.
Lalu Nadia tersenyum malu, dan mereka melanjutkan perjalanan berdampingan.

Today, I went to the beach with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my
4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed.
There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.
She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!
